Word stress

For most countries the word stress is the same for the country and the nationality, e.g.
Russia – Russian
But sometimes it’s different:
Italy – Italian
China – Chinese

2.1 Read the rule.

Как вы уже знаете, глагол be в английском языке спрягается (т.е. изменяется по лицам и числам). Для we и they его форма are. Отрицание образуется при помощи отрицательной частицы not, а для образования вопроса необходимо поставить глагол be перед подлежащим.

2.2 +, – and ? sentences with be.


Negative constructions

We are not = We aren’t OR We’re not
You are not = You aren’t OR You’re not
They are not = They aren’t OR They’re not

Word order in questions

They’re Chinese. – Are they Chinese?

2.3 Replace the word (s) in bold with a pronoun, e.g. he, they, we, etc.

1.1 In this exercise we’ll practise to use nationality adjectives in a sentence.

We are going to hear a man or a woman saying I’m from + a country, and he has to say the nationality using he’s… if it’s a man and she’s… if it’s a woman.

Play the first example, getting the Student to say He’s Spanish after the beep. Then the Student will hear the correct answer.
Continue with the other people on the recording.
