Examples

  • The Hilton Hotel is the most expensive hotel in the city.
  • Luke is a good player, but he isn’t the best in the team.

Forms

the + short adjectives + -est old → the oldest

nice → the nicest

big → the biggest

the + short adjectives ending in -y: -y => i + -est easy → the easiest

heavy → the heaviest

noisy → the noisiest

the most + long adjectives (2 + syllables) expensive → the most expensive

polite → the most polite

careful → the most careful

Irregular good → the best

bad → the worst

far → the farthest/furthest


Usage

Use superlatives to say that something is at the upper or lower limit of a quality.

➢ The church is the oldest building in the town.

➢ Mary is the most intelligent girl in our class.

  • Always use the before the superlative word.

➢ The Nile is the longest river in the world.

➢ What is the most beautiful place in Russia?

Some people say that money is most important thing in life.
