In Old English, people had different rules, and most verbs were irregular (go — gan, do — don). Later some verbs took the ending -ed, but older words didn’t change and became «irregular».

Remember

  • V2 = the second column in the list of irregular verbs, e.g. go (V1) — went (V2)
  • Use V2 only in «+»

Usage

  • To talk about finished actions in the past.

❖ Some words became irregular.

❖ People learnt exceptions.

❖ My brother gave me a present for my last birthday.

❖ When did they see the ghost?

  • Use Past Simple with the markers.

yesterday

He fell off the horse yesterday.

last week, last month, last year, etc.

We sent them a message last week.

❖ 2 days ago, one week ago, etc.

My niece spent all her money a week ago.

in 2015, in 1867

She became the Prime Minister in 2000.

  • Do not use did/did not with could:

I could not speak English when I was six year old.
